What Should Be Considered in Liver Transplantation?

Drug Use

Take the immunosuppressive medications prescribed to you, which prevent your body from rejecting the liver, at the recommended dosage, at the same time and in the same way every day.

Cleaning and Hygiene

Liver transplant patients must be particularly careful about their personal hygiene because they take immunosuppressant medications. Regular showering, careful hand and body hygiene, and brushing teeth are extremely important. Wearing a mask is recommended in crowded environments.

Nutrition and Diet

Excessive weight gain should be avoided after liver transplantation. Regular weight monitoring is essential. Otherwise, your new liver may become fatty and lose function. Sugar and salt should be avoided, especially in the early stages after discharge. An average of 2 liters of fluid should be consumed daily.

Exercise

Brisk walking is the most appropriate exercise method to begin in the early period after discharge. Strenuous exercise should be avoided during this period. If you are in good health, exercises such as swimming can be started after the sixth month.

Driving

It will be more appropriate for you to drive after the first month after discharge.

Alcohol

Alcohol is strictly prohibited after liver transplantation.

Smoking

Smoking is strictly prohibited after liver transplantation.

Travel

There is nothing preventing you from traveling domestically or internationally after discharge. The most important thing to remember during your travels is to take adequate medication with you.

Sexual Activity and Reproduction

Sexual activity can be resumed starting three months after liver transplantation. Pregnancy is not recommended for the first year after liver transplantation. You can become pregnant in the following periods, provided you are under the supervision of your doctor.

Vaccinations

Administering live (attenuated) vaccines is strictly prohibited.

Pets and Plants

There is no harm in contact with vaccinated pets. Gloves should always be worn when handling soil.
